That’s usually what I love most about it; the freedom to come and go, take month-long vacations in between assignments, forgo all those pesky staff meetings, but the part that can be challenging is when the well dries up. The money well, the job well, the options well. There are times throughout the year when the (good) jobs become scarce and the nurses become fierce. Right now is one of those times….SUMMER. Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t find any job, anywhere, but it just may not be the nice “make your own schedule and get paid really well in an amazing city” job. Don’t worry, those will return. You decide how much, or little, you want to work and just let them know the day before. You have to be flexible, but as travel nurses, we’re pretty good at that. And, some registry companies will even pay you the same day-major win!

Per diem–

It’s not uncommon for hospitals to recruit their travel nurses, so if you’re not interested in going staff, but don’t have your next job lined up, snag one of these amazing per diem slots. I’ve worked per diem at my home hospital ever since I started traveling and it’s the best of both worlds. I head home when the jobs are slim, spend a little time with family and friends and work until I’m ready to take off again. Plus, they usually have the highest paying hourly wage, and you know we’re all about that.

Vacation–

Ok, no surprise that this is my favorite option! It does take a little planning and preparation, but taking a month or so off between contracts might just be the best thing for you. It’s always good to relax and reset so when the great jobs start popping back up, you’re fresh and ready to be your best nurse self!

Wanderly–

As I said above, there will always be jobs out there, just maybe not where you’ve been looking, but that’s where Wanderly can help. Peruse any city and see what’s out there without picking up your phone and calling your recruiter. Maybe you’ll find a great package in a place you never even thought of going!

At the end of the day (or contract), remember we’re all nurses and we have options! Jobs ebb and flow just like life, but I promise, what’s dry now will soon be overflowing.
