Child & Adolescent Unit 

  • 1 H Unit is mixed unit (males/females) with mainly autistic patients (non-verbal patients as well)
  • Patients range between 5-17 yrs. old
  • 14 bed unit (12 patient census typically)
  • Expectation for length of stay is around 2 weeks, but can actually last up to 6 months (usually building a rapport with the patients)
  • Have to be comfortable being hands-on with patients (will be using restraints when necessary, but will be trained on these), also must be ok with working with incontinent teenagers
  • Many patients are non-verbal and express themselves in physical ways (may also become aggressive)
  • Must have patience
  • Family dynamics can be challenging at times because you are dealing with patients from different backgrounds (i.e. a mom may not want the dad to come visit their child)
  • Good documentation is key at the end of each shift
    • Because they may have to use restraints, progress notes with all of the details makes a huge difference
  • Extremely important to follow behavior plan
  • Must be professional, proper attire (will get sent home if not dressed appropriately), promote team building
    • Must put differences aside to get the job done
    • See the Charge RN or if our nurses are having challenges though
  • Must be open to constructive feedback and able to take direction
  • Peds experience would be preferred (also Neuropsych)
  • Ratios are 10-11 staff members to 14 patients (this include 2-3 nurses on days and evenings along with 8 mental health workers)
  • Will start assignment on a Friday and be in classroom orientation for 1 week (day hours for everyone)
  • They will have 2 additional weeks after that with a mentor on the unit before being on their own
