Job Description

Skills and Experience Required:

RN

·         Phase 1 Recovery experience required

·         Recovery required 1-2 years minimum experience

·         BLS, ACLS and PALS are required

·         Epic experience strongly preferred

·         Minimum of 1 year experience as a travel RN is preferred

General Comments Shift times are variable 8 hours.  On call required, 5-7 days per month to include 1 weekend per month.

PeriAnethesia:  

Perianesthesia RNs work in PACU, Same Day Surgery, PAT and Special Procedure unit (very similar to Same Day Surgery Unit). They provide support to the Inpatient and Outpatient areas including support in Interventional Radiology and GI. Typical Procedures Performed General – Open, laparoscopic, robotic; General/Vascular;  GYN - Open, laparoscopic, robotic;  Orthopedic – total joints, fractures; Ortho-spine;  Urology - Open, laparoscopic, robotic; Neuro – Crani, spine; Podiatry; Ophthalmic; ENT – adult head and neck, pediatric T&A’s, ear tubes. 

·         4400 surgical cases this year; 350 per month

·         Beds on units:

o   8 in the PACU

o   22 in the ambulatory areas including per/post op

o   12 in the special procedures area

·         Level 4 trauma

·         Charting: EPIC

 

Phase I level of care:

·         Class 1:2 One nurse to 2 patients

o   2 conscious patients, stable & free of complications

o   2 conscious pts, stable, 8y/0 & under with support staff present

o   1 unconscious pt, hemodynamically stable, with a stable airway, over the age of 8y/o & 1 conscious pt stable and free of complications

·         Class 1:1 One nurse to one patient

o   At the time of admission, until *critical elements have been met

o   Airway &/or hemodynamically unstable

o   Any unconscious 8y/o and under

·         Class 2:1 Two nurses to 1 patient

o   One critically ill unstable patient

 

Phase II level of care:

·         Class 1:3 One nurse to 3 patients

o   Over 8y/o

o   8y/o & under with family present

·         Class 1:2 One nurse to 2 patients

o   8y/o & under no family or support staff present

o   Initial admission of patient post procedure (ex cath/IR/GI).

·         Class 1:1 One nurse to one patient

o   Unstable patient any age requiring transfer to a higher level of care.

 

Day of Surgery / Procedure:

·         Due to the varied complexities recommended staffing ratios are based on but not limited to:

o   Patient safety

o   Complexity (acuity) &required nursing interventions

·         Average time to prep (e.g. education, testing, history completion, IV access, completion of paperwork / electronic charting.
