New Mexico Registered Nurse (RN) Licensing Guide

New Mexico is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.

License by Exam

To begin the licensure by examination process, you will first need to:

  1. Complete an application with the New Mexico State Board of Nursing. The application will require various documents such as transcripts from your nursing program and proof of successful completion of a recognized licensing exam.
  2. Pay the required fees.

Once your application has been reviewed and approved, you will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) or Licensed Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

After passing the NCLEX, there may still be additional requirements before receiving your official nursing license in New Mexico. These requirements can include fingerprinting for background checks and verification from previous educational institutions or employers. You will then be issued your nursing license.

License by Endorsement

Licensure by endorsement is a process that allows nurses who are already licensed in another state to obtain their nursing license in New Mexico.

To begin the licensure by endorsement process, you will need to:

  1. Submit an application to the New Mexico State Board of Nursing. The application will require you to provide proof of your current nursing license and complete any additional documentation requested.
  2. Once your application has been reviewed and approved, you may be required to undergo a criminal background check and submit verification of your education and work experience. It's important to note that requirements may vary depending on individual circumstances, so it's always best to refer directly to the board's guidelines.

After all necessary documents have been submitted and reviewed, you will then receive your nursing license from the New Mexico State Board of Nursing. Congratulations! You can now practice as a nurse in this beautiful state.

Getting a Temporary License

To obtain a Temporary License, nurses must meet certain requirements set by the New Mexico State Board of Nursing. These requirements typically include proof of education and licensure from another state, submission of an application with supporting documents, and payment of applicable fees.

Once approved, nurses with a Temporary License can practice nursing within the scope outlined by the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act. It's important to note that this type of license is only valid for a specified period and cannot be renewed or extended beyond that timeframe.

Renewing your License

Maintaining an active nursing license is crucial for healthcare professionals, including those in New Mexico. The process of renewing your nursing license is relatively straightforward and ensures that you can continue practicing without any interruptions.

To renew your nursing license in New Mexico, you will need to:

  1. Submit a renewal application to the New Mexico State Board of Nursing. This application typically includes personal information, such as your name, address, and contact details.
  2. Pay the renewal fee.
  3. You may also be required to provide documentation of continuing education credits or other professional development activities completed during the previous licensure period. Current CE requirements are:
    • 30 contact hours of approved continuing education are required every 24 months (every two years) prior to the license expiration.
    • CE must be complete and uploaded to CE Broker before you submit your renewal, otherwise the renewal will not be approved.

It's important to note that there are specific deadlines for submitting your renewal application. Typically, licenses must be renewed every two years by the last day of your birth month. However, it's essential to check with the New Mexico State Board of Nursing for any updates or changes regarding renewal deadlines.

Once your renewal application has been processed and approved by the board, you will receive a new nursing license reflecting its updated expiration date.
