South Dakota Registered Nurse (RN) Licensing Guide
South Dakota is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
License by Exam
Licensure by Examination is the most common pathway for aspiring nurses to obtain their license in South Dakota.
To begin the licensure by examination process, applicants must:
- Submit an application to the South Dakota State Board of Nursing. This application includes providing proof of successful completion of an approved nursing program, as well as any required documentation such as transcripts or letters of recommendation.
- Once the application has been reviewed and approved, candidates will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) from Pearson VUE, the organization responsible for administering the NCLEX. With this ATT in hand, individuals can schedule their exam at a designated testing center.
After passing the NCLEX the South Dakota State Board of Nursing will review your application and issue you a nursing license.
License by Endorsement
Licensure by Endorsement is an option for registered nurses who are already licensed in another state.
To apply for licensure by endorsement, you must:
- Submit an application directly to the South Dakota State Board of Nursing.
- Submit documentation such as proof of current licensure, verification of education, and a fingerprint background check.
Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will be issued a South Dakota nursing license. It's important to note that each state has its own requirements and fees for endorsement, so it's essential to research the specific guidelines for South Dakota.
Getting a Temporary License
If you're looking to start working as a nurse in South Dakota while waiting for your permanent license, you may need to obtain a temporary license. This temporary license allows you to practice nursing under certain conditions until your permanent license is issued.
To apply for a temporary license, you'll need to submit an application along with the required fee and supporting documents. The South Dakota State Board of Nursing will review your application and determine if you meet the eligibility requirements. If you are issued a temporary license it will be valid for 90 days.
Renewing your License
The South Dakota Board of Nursing requires nurses to renew their licenses biennially. The renewal process involves:
- Submitting an application.
- Providing proof of employment history, and any disciplinary actions taken against you.
- Paying the required fees.
South Dakota does not require continuing education (CE) hours for RN or LPN renewal.
To begin the renewal process, visit the South Dakota Board of Nursing's website and navigate to the license renewal section. There you will find detailed instructions on how to complete the application online or via mail. Make sure to review all the requirements carefully before proceeding.
